Association agreement between Ukraine and the EU determines the need to harmonize national approaches to innovation policy making with the European ones. In particular, the European Commission pays a lot of attention to the innovative development of regions, which is embodied in smart specialization strategies. They are based on supporting the development of unique industries and economic activities that represent specialization of certain regions within the national economic system. Moreover, the strategies is one of the conditions for obtaining financing from the EU structural funds
The discussion on smart specialisation concept and its possible implementation in Ukraine was initiated together with active dialogue with the European Commission and Joint Research Center.
